Progressive Part 2 Movements Review

Directions: Under each complete the phrase, answer the question, fill in the blank, or define the definition.

Describe what a settlement house is:
Community centers that provided social service to all the urban poor.
Who was the leading figure of the settlement house movement? Why?
Jane Adams was the leader of the movement.
Describe Progressive Children’s reforms:
It was to improve the lives of children by trying to ban child labor.

Describe Progressive Industrial Workers Reform: What was the leading cause of it?
A fire broke out in 1911 at a triangle shirt factory and this cause many states to pass working conditions and compensation laws.
Describe gov reforms during progressive era:

Direct primary-took choice out of party leaders and handed it to people

Recall-allows citizens to remove elected officials by votes.

Referendum-allows citizens to vote or reject laws

Initiative-people could propose new laws by getting enough signatures to get a new law on the ballot.

Jim Crow Laws- allowing the south to enact in segregation.

Plessey vs. Ferguson
When segregation became reality and the Supreme Court holds up.
Describe how the NAACP started and its mission
It waas formed when both black and whites got together to free one group of African Americans.
